Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre 2000. Glenn Murcutt |
|
 |
Australia’s only Pritzker–prize winning architect is Glenn Murcutt, and we reckon this is his best building! If that’s not reason enough to put it on top of the list it also happens to be a master-class in off-form concrete, local hard-woods and good old corrugated iron and gives you a peek into his full oeuvre. A few hours out of town but well worth the trip. Contact Sonya to visit. (photo Bundanon Trust) |

Aurora Place office and apartment buildings 2000 Renzo Piano Building Workshop
This is Piano’s homage to Utzon’s ‘grand old lady down the road’, a subversive, elegantly slender and feminine take on corporate space. It’s counterpoint, the tall, dark and handsome Governor Phillip Tower right across the road is also worth a look. See our book reviews this month for a new release on Renzo Piano. |

Harry Seidler’s best building and a wonderfully bold and elegant sign in the early 1960’s that modernism had duly arrived in Sydney. Avalons Organics |
|
 |
Avalons Organics was one of the very first organic shops to open. Beautiful, artistic banquet of luscious fruits and vegetables. The daily layout is so attractively laid out, you get hungry the moment you walk in. Tastings are a common feature, as is the offering of unique and exotic varieties for you to buy and try for the very first time. Organic cheeses, olive oils, meats, drinks, nuts etc, make it almost unnecessary to shop anywhere else. The owner and staff are knowledgeable, delightful, and friendly without being obtrusive. Great produce and atmosphere that makes organic more than just fuel for the body. |

Gould's Book Arcade |

Goulds in Newtown is not for the faint hearted, but a magnificent place to spend a long weekend afternoon. Is there a system to locating the books on the shelves, maybe...but I have not worked it out yet.
However, everything you could want is located somewhere on those shelves. The books are so inexpensive, that every time I visit, I leave knowing that the month ahead will take me to amazing literary places.
This is only for those who love literature, if I am after glossy picture magazines, or latest new releases, I always make it to Berkelows in Paddington or Kornikunya in the city. |

North Sydney Olympic Pool |

North Sydney Olympic Pool
My favourite swimming pool would have to be the iconic 50 metre, heated North Sydney Olympic Pool. This pool was first opened in 1936 with 86 world records being set in its water by swimming greats such as Jon Konrads and Shane Gould. The best time to go is after work – you dive in and your worries drift away. Swimming backstroke under the stars is heaven and so is the view of the famous smile of Luna Park, the Harbour Bridge and sails of the Opera House. The salt-water makes it easier for you to float and so you also swim faster! |

From Palm Cove along the coast up to the Daintree is beautful. Lushious and green it's like your on an exotic tropical island. You can head inland and explore of take a boat trip out on the Barrier Reef from Cairns. It's easy to understand why folks are heading north.

An awesome little tapas bar and dining area. Its design and layout seem to work really well. Tall communal bar tables and outdoor wooden benches – under heaters for winter. I love all their food combinations and find myself ordering ‘my favourites’. A great local mid range option. (its always super busy) |

My favourite website for gifts for my sisters and girlfriends is the Peter Alexander site. With lots of cosy PJ's in the Winter and sexy slips, or singles and boxer shorts in the Summer, you can't go wrong. My sister down in Melbourne loved her present she recieved in the mail a few weeks ago.

Point Erin Pool is a great local pool to take the family in the summer. The kids will play for hours on the diving board, slide and pools. And I can lie back in the sun, read my book and event take in the view of Auckland Harbour Bridge. One of Auckland's best pool facilities! |

Robot Sushi |

Robot is a slice of Neo-Tokyo set in Melbourne's alley culture. Here you'll find Melbourne's best range of sake and asian beers as well as excellent sushi.
This two-storey bar is lovingly decked out with toy robots, posters and paraphenalia. The space also hosts free screenings of Japanese animation and is a hub for enthusiasts of manga culture and all things Japanese.
Definately worth a visit for some sashimi and a beer. |

Seal Rocks, North Coast, NSW |
|
 |
On Boxing Day last year we headed aimlessly up the coast without any accommodation booked towards Seal Rocks. We found the Yagon Camp Site down an unsurfaced road in the National Park and set up camp under the trees. Over the dunes was the beach which was so isolated (although quite a surfers haven I think) and the water the clearest I have seen. It was very 'chilled out' and there was even a pod of about 6 dolphins riding the waves with the surfers. |

St Kilda Adventure Playground |
|
 |
Given that I’ve not got lots of buddies with kids – I have experienced the amazing local gem that is the St Kilda Adventure Playground. Completely put together by volunteers – it is one of the best little hidden kids parks you will ever see. Entry is free – they have a donation box so they can re-stock the coffee facilities they provide. Just be aware, its only open 3.30pm – 5.30pm weekdays and then 10am – 5pm weekends. With in-ground and above ground trampolines, tyre bridges and wooden mazes, huge rocking horses, tunnels, slides, a sand pit and the odd chicken running around – its something special. |

The Mint 2005 FJMT |
|
 |
There is an encouraging trend in the city’s development that is helping retain some of Sydney’s historic character, adapting and appropriating old buildings to a new use. Historic buildings like The Mint the Customs House at Circular Quay and the Walsh Bay Finger Wharves are great examples of how thoughtful and sympathetic contemporary additions can bring new life and energy to their historic context. My favourite online gift site is Wiish List I first came across this gift site when I received one of their hampers from a friend as a thankyou gift. The present was a surprise when it was delivered, and it\\\'s always great to get lovely surprises in a box, all wrapped up and beautifully presented. I now use their service when I want to pass on the same experience to someone special. |

World Vision Smiles |
|
 |
While stuggling online to find a present for a good friend I came across the perfect gift (for the the person who has everything). World Vision have a great scheme where they will deliver a goat to a family in India or a vegie pack to a family in Angola. So instead of sending something my friend something she might never use. I found something that I knew whe would feel good about. She received a card from me showing the gift being given in her name, and a family in sudan received a Emergency relief kit. |
